چکیده

Pedestrian are most at risk when crossing a road section with a large amount of pedestrian-vehicle interaction. Thus, an understanding of the complex interaction between pedestrian behaviour, signal setting and environment is essential to assess the contribution of these factors to pedestrian accidents. The complexity of these interactions could possibly been described and explored using a powerful and flexible model. The new approach in modelling to produce pedestrian crossing risk index using Petri Nets is introduced in this paper. The proposed model is served as an alternative method to the classical statistical approach in assessing pedestrian crossing risk at signalised intersection. The risk assessment is viewed holistically as an interacting system of subsequent event in an accident process. Observation on the critical signalised crossing and accident history data are used in the development of this risk

Pedestrian crossing location influences injury severity in urban areas.

BACKGROUND Pedestrian incidents represent an increasing proportion of serious injuries resulting from motor vehicle collisions in Canada. However, few studies have examined the effect of pedestrian crossing location in urban areas on injury severity. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between pedestrian-motor vehicle collision injury severity and crossing location. ...

Improving Pedestrian LOS at Traffic Signals

Christchurch City Council commissioned an investigation into ways of improving pedestrian level of service (LOS) at traffic signals in the central city. In 2009, Gehl Architects prepared a study entitled Public Space Public Life (2010) that considered how people use public spaces and streets in central Christchurch. This precedent study resulted in Christchurch City Council’s adoption of A City...

Crossing Behaviour of the Elderly: Road Safety Assessment through Simulations

The assessment of the safety of road crossing facilities in urban scenarios can be supported by means of advanced computer-based simulations. Integrated models considering the vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and their interactions, still lack empirical evidences about the heterogeneous features of pedestrians, with particular reference to age-driven crossing behaviour. Elderly pedestrians are...

The impact of pedestrian countdown signals on pedestrian–motor vehicle collisions: a quasi-experimental study

OBJECTIVE To determine whether pedestrian countdown signals (PCS) reduce pedestrian-motor vehicle collisions in the city of Toronto, Canada. METHODS A quasi-experimental study design was used to evaluate the effect of PCS on the number of pedestrian-motor vehicle collisions in the city of Toronto, from January 2000 to December 2009. Each intersection acted as its own control. We compared the ...

Crosswalk markings and the risk of pedestrian-motor vehicle collisions in older pedestrians.

CONTEXT Motor vehicles struck and killed 4739 pedestrians in the United States in the year 2000. Older pedestrians are at especially high risk. OBJECTIVE To determine whether crosswalk markings at urban intersections influence the risk of injury to older pedestrians. DESIGN Case-control study in which the units of study were crossing locations. SETTING Six cities in Washington and Califor...
